Handcrafted Tools for Calm, Grounding, and Bilateral Stimulation
Thoughtfully crafted wooden tools designed to support emotional regulation, grounding, and nervous-system awareness. A tangible way to slow down, reconnect, and breathe.
What Is Bilateral Stimulation?
Bilateral stimulation is commonly used in therapeutic settings, including EMDR, to help reduce emotional distress and support the reprocessing of difficult or overwhelming experiences. By engaging both sides of the body in a rhythmic, alternating pattern, bilateral stimulation can help the nervous system move out of a heightened “fight or flight” state and into a place of balance and regulation.
A Handcrafted Bilateral Grounding Tool
The Curious Canoe is a sculptural, hand-made wooden piece designed to gently rock back and forth while a weighted ball rolls from side to side. This simple, rhythmic motion encourages bilateral engagement and sensory focus, helping quiet racing thoughts and bring awareness back into the body.
Each Piece Is:
- Handcrafted from natural wood
- Designed to engage sight, sound, touch, and movement
- Built with intention, simplicity, and durability
- Unique — no two are exactly alike
The Curious Canoe is used by individuals, therapists, counselors, and anyone seeking a tactile way to ground themselves during moments of stress or anxiety.
Crafted by Hand. Inspired by Experience.
Bilateral Roll was born at the intersection of craftsmanship and lived experience
I am a carpenter, furniture maker, and woodworker with over 25 years of experience working with my hands. My wife is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor trained in EMDR. After an injury ended my daily routine, anxiety — something I had always carried — came sharply into focus.
I learned that my nervous system lived almost permanently in “fight or flight.” Years of loud tools and music had left me with tinnitus, and my ADHD mind couldn’t stop focusing on it. Panic attacks followed. Sleep became difficult. Peace felt distant.
The Curious Canoe began as a request from one of my wife’s counseling partners — a simple concept for a bilateral stimulation sculpture. I had time, so I made one. Then another. Then several more for EMDR-trained counselors. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive.
But the true purpose of this tool revealed itself to me personally.
A Tool That Met Me Where I Was
One difficult night, when anxiety and tinnitus became overwhelming, I reached for the prototype canoe. I found a calming sound video, sat quietly, and began rocking the piece back and forth.
I focused on:
- The unfinished wood beneath my fingertips
- The weight and sound of the ball rolling
- The gentle rhythm of the movement
- My breathing
Something shifted. The spiral of anxiety, panic, and tinnitus loosened its grip. My body calmed. My mind found rhythm. I prayed. I rested. I slept.
I don’t claim healing — but I do claim hope.
Each piece is made with intention, prayer, and respect for the person who will hold it. This is not mass-produced. This is not rushed. This is work done slowly, by hand, with care.
Faith, Craft, and Care
It is my belief that God often provides what we need before we know we need it. Therapy was never something I would have sought on my own, yet God placed a counselor in my life — my wife — long before I understood how deeply I would need these tools.
Bilateral Roll exists because of that provision
